Milan Want Genoa Loanee Alexander Merkel Back

The young midfielder is on his way back to Milan, but is he really going to play or he will be used as a Tevez bait?

Milan have an injury crisis on their hands in midfield, so are trying to persuade Genoa to return Alexander Merkel.

The German talent was one of the shining lights of the Rossoneri youth team, but half his contract was sold to Genoa over the summer as part of the Stephan El Shaarawy deal.

“Merkel is an important element for us and he is going to become a champion,” said Genoa President Enrico Preziosi.

“I will talk to the lad to figure out what his aspirations are.”

The Rossoblu are unwilling to simply hand back Merkel mid-season unless ElShaarawy makes the same journey in the opposite direction.

“We will see how the situation evolves over the next few days,” agent FabioParisi told Calciomercato.it.

“For now he remains a Genoa player.”

  1. Merkel is a long term solution to our midfield. I think he is a far above average player.

And, believe in it or not, during his tenure in our Primavera squad he basically warmed the bench. Every time I watched that team Stroppa used a 4-2-3-1 formation and he loved to start the games with three defensive midfielders (Strasser, Pedrocchi and Novinic) and two wingers (Oduamadi and “Verdinho” :-)), with Zigoni acting as a centre forward.

So I was extremely surprised when Allegri took him – alongside Simone Verdi – to Emirates Cup in 2010.
