Milan haven’t given up the battle for the talented defender…
Arsenal’s hopes of signing defender, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, this winter have been dented after reports that Milan are also chasing the Montpellier youngster, who is expected to leave the French club when the transfer window reopens in January.
Milan are reported to have offered Montpellier ‘anything they like’ for the 23-year-old as the Italian giants look to solidify their defense following the sale of Thiago Silva in the summer. Indeed, Milan are in desperate need of a secure defender having lost four of nine games this season; they currently sit 11th in Serie A.
Yanga-Mbiwa attracted a lot of attention over the past 12 months for his performances in a blue shirt; he has been a bright light among a sky of fallen stars at the back for Montpellier, who currently sit a dismal 15th in Ligue 1. Indeed, the French club’s troubles have somewhat reflected those of Milan, with big-name players leaving in the summer aiding to an underachieving squad this season.
Montpellier, who are 949/1 in the best odds to win Champions League, have won just two games this campaign and many blame their strike force for this demise. The club lost Olivier Giroud to Arsenal this summer and, despite winning the league last season, have struggled to cope with his absence of fire-power.
Indeed, so bad have the French club become that players like Yanga-Mbiwa are already thinking of jumping ship, with Arsenal a favorable destination because of manager Arsene Wenger’s French links.
However, a big bid from Massimiliano Allegri’s side may just be enough to convince Yanga-Mbiwa to head to Italy. The strong and quick defender would fit in well in Milan’s back four, alongside Philippe Mexes or Ignazio Abate, and it is amazing Allegri did not make a move for him in the summer as a solid replacement for Silva.
