Goalkeeper Gabriel To Be Abbiati’s Successor

The future is now!

The past couple of seasons, Milan have been in a constant search for a reliable goalkeeper to replace Christian Abbiati in the near future.

Numerous of worldwide experienced and inexperienced young talents were linked with a San Siro move. Starting from Basel’s Yann Sommer, Santos’ Rafael, Italians such as Mattia Perin, Andrea Consigli, Michael Agazzi, Federico Marchetti – summing up with Serie B’s revelation Alberto Brignoli.

In fact, the man they were looking for is in their own roster – and now the Italian giants seem to have finally realized it.

Gabriel, who turns 21 in September, has been at the Rossoneri for the entire previous season, but never managed to debut under coach Massimiliano Allegri. That is all about to change, as the Brazilian has been promoted as Abbiati’s back-up next term.

“Gabriel is Milan’s goalkeeper of the future. He is doing a great job and we are counting a lot on him”, CEO Adriano Galliani told journalist during the MSC cruise.

The former under-20 World Cup hero appeared for the Primavera squad on 9 occasions, managing to keep a clean sheet on almost half of them. The pleased goalkeeping staff is said to be amazed by his abilities and many of them have already raised their voice on Gabriel’s bright future.

Milan coach Allegri, who can often be seen alongside the talented Brazilian, is the latest person to praise him. “Gabriel has improved a lot during the season and has all the abilities to become a great goalkeeper”, he said.

When things sum up, we come to a point when we start questioning Marco Amelia’s presence. It is very likely that the former Genoa goalkeeper will be shown the exit door, as newly-promoted side Livorno could be given the opportunity to snatch their former player.

There was also talk of letting Gabriel gain some experience in lower-ranked Serie A clubs, but now that the plans sustained some dramatic changes, all eyes shall be pointed towards the future rising star.

Well, I believe we are all looking forward to the new season – at least there is one thing to be optimistic for!
